The Dream Stealer

THAT NIGHT, SNUGGLED in thick blankets in the bird’s nest, Merrilyn dreamt. She found herself in the middle of the forest, turning in confusion among the tall, dark trees. They all looked the same. She shivered and her hands trembled as she fought for control over the fear welling up inside. She tried desperately to calm herself enough to think clearly. That is, until she saw the fog.

Gray tendrils crept along the ground toward her, covering the low shrubbery until she couldn't even see her feet. It covered the ground around her in every direction, clinging to her like a milky cloud. The fear and panic within her was stifling. A shiver raced up her spine as she realized she was not alone.

"Ah, I see Loian has left his mark on you. What a pity. I was always rather fond of your dark curls," said a voice from somewhere behind her.

She turned, trying to see who had spoken, but the fog pressed in close, blurring her view.

"Who are you?" she asked, not sure she wanted to hear the answer.

"I am the Dream Stealer, Merrilyn," he said and she could hear the smile in his voice.

Merrilyn shuddered.

"Oh, you don't have to fear me, Merrilyn," said the voice.

She looked around wildly.

He laughed. "Don't worry yourself. I won't hurt you here. It is only a dream. You may not even remember this when you wake. Then again, maybe you will, but that is up to you."

"Then why are you here?" she asked.

"Because it is the only way we can be alone. Here in your dreams we can talk for hours, but when you wake, you are surrounded by those fools who lead you through the forest each day."

She huffed.

He paused. "I'm sorry. You've taken offense that I called your friends fools. Well, please forgive me, but the evidence seems to be on my side, don't you think?"

"No, I do not! They are all very clever."

He laughed. "Really? I should think you would be quite tired of them by now. It seems to me that you are the only one who is very clever, but then they never listen to you, do they, Merrilyn?"

She shook her head. "I don't know what you mean."

"Sure you do. First, there is that spoiled princess who led you off into a trap. None of them would listen when you tried to warn them. Aiden lied to all of you about his position. It is shocking Loian put up with such a blatant deception, don't you think?"

Merrilyn frowned, wanting to argue in their defense, but he hurried on before she could interrupt.

"And of course we can't forget your dear prince, Justan. Ah, Justan. He hasn't listened to you from the very beginning, has he? He never believed you spoke with Loian. Did you know he thought you were insane? On his way to meet you in the mountains, he was making plans to confine you for insanity."

Her irritation shifted into shocked outrage.

He laughed. "Yes, exactly! I am surprised you keep company with such a crew.
